If It's Lovin' You Want
Album: Music Of The Sun
Year: 2005

Rihanna advertises herself as her guy friend's ideal girlfriend in the dusty "If It's Lovin' You Want."

She opens the single, singing the first verse acapella. It sets a vapid tone. She beckons him to stay. He had told her he had gotten vibes from her. However, he didn't know if he should pursue a relationship with her or not. She says she will tell him she likes him.

"I want to let you know/That you don't have to go/Don't wonder no more/What I think about you."

In the chorus, she says she's his dream girl. She can give him an affectionate relationship and fulfill his needs. They can talk over their expectations of each other.

"If it's lovin' that you want/Then you should make me your girl, your girl/If it's lovin' that you need/Baby come and share my world, share my world/If it's lovin' that you want/Then come and take a walk with me, walk with me/Cause, everything that you need, I got it right here baby, baby."

In the second verse, she says he's by himself too much and should have someone in his life that will stand by him. She can be his confidant. With her, he can be frank and not be judged. Everything he tells her will be between them.

"Now it's obvious you need a friend to come hold you down/Be that one you share your everything when no one's around/Baby come tell me your secrets, and tell me all your dreams/Cause I can see you need someone to trust/You can trust in me."

In the bridge, she says she's available whenever he wants to talk. She'll be his supporter.

"Di di di di da da dey/So just call me whenever your lonely/Di di di di da da dey/I'll be your friend, I can be your homey."

The chorus is sung again.

In the third verse, she hasn't fallen for a guy for a while. Taking the step from friends to lovers would be logical. They already have a strong foundation. She vows to treat him right. She says she won't use him as a status symbol around school. She just wants to be with him.

"It's been so long I've had this feeling/That we could be/Everything you'veever wanted baby/Your fantasy/I won't push too hard or break your heart/Cause my love's sincere/I'mnot like any other girl you know/So let me erase your fears."

She says she wants him in her life.

"What I think about you boy/I got what you need so come share my world oh."

Her guy friend is shy and a loner. She talks to him in between classes and after school sometimes. However, she never could get close to him. However, they've spending a lot of time together and she's been flirting with him. He's getting the hints. She reassures him that it's not a joke and her friendship is for real. She tells him they will be happy and she won't try to change him like other girls have.

Rihanna's anemic, rough vocals toil to stay steady. However, her lapses into poor pronunciation habits ("girl" becomes "grrl," "wonder" is "wonda") and muttering are amateurish mistakes.

The lumpy steel drum and bass arrangement is nonessential. The tacked on steel drums and obnoxious DJ who "woo's" every so often is just there. The bass is prevalent and moldable. Any singer or extra instrument could've been added and not made a difference.

"If It's Lovin' You Want" drones on in a formulaic fashion.
