Ain’t No Other Man
Album: Back To Basics
Christina Aguilera is in awe of her husband in the exulting “Ain’t No Other Man.”
Muted horns and the “The Cissy’s Thing” sample by the Soul Seven open the single, setting a vitalizing tone. When she first met her husband, she wanted to know everything about him. He fascinated her and she wanted to spend every spare moment with him. She can’t pinpoint exactly a specific phrase or mannerism that attracted her. She knew it was just there. She immediately began to tell her family, friends, and past boyfriends about the great love she found. The “Hippy Skippy Moon Strut” by the Moon People is used in the chorus.
“Do your thang honey!/I could feel it from the start/Couldn't stand to be apart/Something about you caught my eye/Something moved me deep inside/Don't know what you did boy but/You had it and I've been hooked ever since/I told my mother, my brother, my sister and my friend/I told the others, my lovers, from past and present tense/Every time I see you everything starts making sense/Do your thang honey!”
In the chorus, she says her husband is a keeper. He’s a gentleman and makes sure to she’s not harmed in anyway. He’s the guy every girl talks about having in her life.
“Ain't no other man, can stand up next to you/Ain't no other man on the planet does what you do
(what you do)/You're the kinda guy, a girl finds in a blue moon/You got soul, you got class/You got style with your bad ass (oh yeah)/Ain't no other man its true (all right)/Ain't no other man but you.”
In the second verse, she imagined her life as living alone, disillusioned by her past relationships. She believed no one was meant for her. However, meeting him taught her true love is possible. She wants him to be as enthusiastic and joyous as she is, announcing to every person he’s ever known, that he has found the person he wants to be with. And also, that he’s unavailable and belongs to her now.
“Do your thang honey!/Never thought I'd be all right, no, no, no!/Till you came and changed my life, yeah, yeah, yeah!/What was cloudy now is clear,, yeah, yeah!/You're the light that I needed/You got what I want boy, and I want it!/So keep on givin' it up!/Tell your mother, your brother, your sister, and your friend/And the others, your lovers, better not be present tense/Cause I want everyone to know that you are mine and no one else's!”
The chorus is sung again.
In the bridge, she says he’s right at her side, listening to her when she’s upset and stressed. He tells her to have faith in herself and reassures her that following her instincts are the right thing to do. Out of the all guys she’s dated, he’s the only one who has been sympathetic, honest, and trusting without any prodding from her.
“Break it down now!/Ain't no other, ain't, ain't no other! (other)/Ain't no other, ain't, ain't no other lover!/Ain't no other, I, I, I need no other!/Ain't no other man but you! Oh!/You are there when I'm a mess/Talk me down from every ledge/Give me strength, boy you're the best/You're the only one who's ever passed every test.”
The chorus is sung twice to end the single.
After previous failed relationships left her cynical, she was able to fall for him without the usual worries. It was natural and right to be with him. But most importantly, she didn’t question the feeling as she had done with her ex-boyfriends.
Aguilera vocals are aglow with the bliss of being in love. She dotes on him, making sure he knows he’s appreciated and a special person to her.
The snazzy big band arrangement (from the “Hippy Skippy Moon Strut”) is reworked into a chic, agile hook. The stylized use of DJ Premier’s samples of obscure songs turns the single into something fresh and artful.
The sublime “Ain’t No Other Man” is one of the year’s best singles.
