will.I.am & Britney Spears

Scream & Shout

Album: #willpower

Year: 2012

will.I.am and Britney Spears hang out at a night club in the plush  “Scream & Shout.”

Alluring synths open the single, setting a high powered tone. A computerized voice says “bring the action.”

The pre-chorus opens the single. In it, Spears says that people are going to want to hear it when they go out. She and will.I. am adds they will attract attention and people will be focused on them, tweeting and texting about them to their friends. (“ When you hear this in the club/You're gonna turn this shit up/You're gonna turn this shit up/You're gonna turn this shit up/When we up in the club/All eyes on us/All eyes on us/All eyes on us/See the boys in the club/They watching us/They watching us/They watching us/Everybody in the club/All eyes on us/All eyes on us/All eyes on us.”)

In the chorus, they both say they want to blow off steam, whoop and holler with their friends after taking shots. They yell their favorite lyrics as they dance around. (“I wanna scream and shout, and let it all out/And scream and shout, and let it out/We saying, oh wee oh wee oh wee oh/We saying, oh wee oh wee oh wee oh/I wanna scream and shout, and let it all out/And scream and shout, and let it out/We saying, oh wee oh wee oh wee oh.”)

The computerized voice returns and says people are listening to will.I.am and Britney. The opening of Britney Spears’ “Gimme More” is sampled at the end with the now famous meme. (“You are now, now rocking with Will.I.Am and Britney, bitch.”)

The beat zips and pings while will.I.am. says “oh yeah” three times over it.

The computerized voice again says “bring the action.”

will.I.am is having a blast. He intends to have fun and keeps his hands full of liqour all night. (“Rock and roll, everybody let's lose control/All the bottom we let it go/Going fast, we ain't going slow, no, no/Hey yo, hear the beat, now let's hit the floor/Drink it up, and then drink some more/Light it up, and let's let it blow, blow, blow/Hey yo, rock it out, rock it now/If you know what we talking 'bout/Turn it up, and burn down the house, ho-house/Hey yo, turn it up, and don't turn it down/Here we go, we gon' shake the ground/Cause everywhere that we go we bring the action.”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

The beat gets another solo as will.I.am says “oh yeah” again.

During the bridge, the exhausted beat relaxes, contented and serene. He says they have fun together and something he wishes they could do more often. He was a having a terrible day and being out with her cheered him up. He doesn’t want to go home yet and go back to reality. (“It goes on and on and on and on/
When me and you party together/I wish this night would last forever/'Cause I was feeling down, now I'm feeling better/And maybe it goes on and on and on and on/When me and you party together/I wish this night would last forever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever.”)

        The chorus is sung again.

        The meme closes the single.

Spears’ detached, uppity vocals are strange, mutating with each note, turning her into someone else entirely.  She uses a British accent for no reason and then switches to an angelic voice. As for the sample of “Britney, bitch,” it only highlights the difference even more and is pointless.  She’s on the single already and having her say the phrase again would’ve updated it a bit.

will.I.am’s decisive, flippant vocals are resolute while he holds court in the club. He wants to forget his troubles and unwind. Nothing is going to stop him from being the life of the party. For once, he is at ease and enjoying himself and not appearing to be studying each beat under a microscope.

The hypnotic “Scream & Shout” taps itself into a dizzying trance, setting out to only have fun.
