Kylie Minogue

I Should Be So Lucky

Album: Kylie

Year: 1987

Kylie Minogue daydreams about her crush in the  harmless “I Should Be So Lucky.”

Sweet synths open the single, setting an innocent tone.  He breaks away from his friends and crosses the hall to her. He ignores the looks and whispers. He holds her hand and they stand close together in deep in conversation. If only it could be so simple. They talk occansionally. She thinks he might like her. She has caught him staring him. The possibility is there, which is enough for her to get excited. In her fantasy, he smiles at her and together, they walk as a couple. It’s after he has told her that he doesn’t want anybody else. All she has is what could be. There could so much more. (“In my imagination/There is no complication/I dream about you all the time/In my mind a celebration/The sweetest of sensation/Thinking you could be mine/In my imagination/There is no hesitation/We walk together hand in hand/I'm dreaming/You fell in love with me/Like I'm in love with you/But dreaming's all I do/If only they'd come true.”)

In the chorus, she sees the other couples pass by and wishes to be one of them. For now, she has to settle for her fantasies. (“I should be so lucky/Lucky lucky lucky/I should be so lucky in love/I should be so lucky/Lucky lucky lucky/I should be so lucky in love.”)

She checks her watch again. He was supposed to meet her ten minutes ago. She starts wondering what’s going on. She has to laugh to herself. Even in her mind, he’s late. However, as his girlfriend, she would be certain to be good to him. She needs him to know she’s alive first, though. It doesn’t seem it’s going to ever happen. The other day she saw him talking close to another girl. She ran to the bathroom and cried. She has to get over him. She’s only hurting herself. (“It's a crazy situation/You always keep me waiting/Because it's only make believe/And I would come a-running/To give you all my loving/If one day you would notice me/My heart is close to breaking/And I can't go on faking/The fantasy that you'll be mine/I'm dreaming/That you're in love with me/Like I'm in love with you/But dreaming's all I do/If only they'd come true.”)

           The chorus is sung again.

In the bridge, a variation of the chorus is sung. (“I should be so lucky (so lucky, so lucky)/I should be so lucky I, I, (I, I)/I should be so lucky (so lucky, so lucky)/I should be so lucky/I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I.”)

Part of the first verse is sung again. (“In my imagination/There is no hesitation/We walk together hand in hand/I'm dreaming/You fell in love with me/Like I'm in love with you/But dreaming's all I do/If only they'd come true.”)

                The chorus is sung again.

Minogue’s  warm vocals is full of hope. He likely sees her as a friend. She wonders why she can’t be as confident like the other girls. To him, she’s a plain Jane. One day, she would like him to discover more beyond looks.

The  winsome  “I Should Be So Lucky” is perfect just as is.
