Zedd & John Bellion

Beautiful Now

Album: True Colors

Year: 2015

John Bellion experiences a perfect moment in the warm  “Beautiful Now.”

Misty synths open the single, setting a buoyant tone.   He stares at his crush’s shoulder, his eyes falling onto her chest. She lifts her eyes to him, pushing her towel up. He apologizes, saying he got caught up in her beauty. He says there is some magic in the air. They won’t ever have time like this again. (“I see what you're wearing, there's nothing beneath it/Forgive me for staring, forgive me for breathing/We might not know why, we might not know how/But baby, tonight, we're beautiful now.”)

In the pre-chorus, he pulls her to him and kisses her. (“We're beautiful now/We're beautiful now.”)

In the chorus, he says their feelings for each other will be obvious to everyone. Everything will seem possible in one night. (“We might not know why, we might not know how/But baby, tonight, we're beautiful now/We'll light up the sky, we'll open the clouds/Cause baby, tonight, we're beautiful now, we're beautiful.”)

He isn’t sure what’s going to happen to between them. But he’s going to spend every second with her trying to figure it out. While at the beach for a party, they met and are sharing something special. They may only have this one night. (“Wherever it's going, I'm gonna chase it/What's left of this moment, I'm not gonna waste it/Stranded together, our worlds have collided/This won't be forever, so why try to fight it?”)

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again.

In the bridge, he says their time is brief but meaningful. They will go their separate ways and fall in love with other people. (“ Let's live tonight like fireflies/
And one by one light up the sky/We disappear and pass the crown/You're beautiful, you're beautiful.”)

An extended pre-chorus is sung. (“We're beautiful now/We're beautiful now/We're beautiful now/We're beautiful now.”)

The chorus is sung again to end the single.

Bellion shouldn’t ever be an actor. The first verse reads like a parody of someone trying to do reading for a part. By the second verse, he does get a little bit better. Maybe another take should’ve been given on the first verse. However, it gels a little too late.

Zedd’s ocean-kissed arrangement swims in the moment, trying to make each second count.  Zedd himself has improved a lot. The nonsensical lyrics are gone. He’s building atmosphere instead of just letting the synths go wild.

The imperfect  “Beautiful Now” has Zedd getting closer to that major single that will become his signature.
