Can’t Feel My Face

Album: Chapter III

Year: 2015

Abel Tesfaye will enjoy the happiness of his new relationship in the   daft “Can’t Feel My Face.”

Tentative strings open the single, setting a paused tone. She smiles at him from across the room, her eyes lifting up and looking back to him before she returns to their friends. Right now, they are blissful and their love is like a dream. However, he is waiting for it to turn into a nightmare. She has the power to destroy him with the same look. However, the moment will live as something as pure and honest. It will be a part of themselves they won’t ever get back. (“ThAnd I know she'll be the death of me, at least we'll both be numb/And she'll always get the best of me, the worst is yet to come/But at least we'll both be beautiful and stay forever young/This I know, yeah, this I know.”)

In the pre-chorus, she tells him the angst and anger is over. It’s an emotion he doesn’t have to expect from her. He is far too broken to experience the depth of love. She’s lying to herself as well as him to stop the inevitable. (“She told me, "Don't worry about it"/She told me, "Don't worry no more"/We both know we can't go without it/She told me you'll never be in love.”)

In the chorus, when he’s around, he’s smiling so much his face hurts. It’s a joy he’s never known and he wants more of it. (“I can't feel my face when I'm with you/But I love it, but I love it, oh/I can't feel my face when I'm with you/But I love it, but I love it.”)

He says the angst has a purpose – to further the root of the emotion and give it life. It’s the one of the few things he is certain of. (“And I know she'll be the death of me, at least we'll both be numb/And she'll always get the best of me, the worst is yet to come/All the misery was necessary when we're deep in love/This I know, girl, I know.”)

                  The pre-chorus is sung again.

                 The chorus is sung twice.

The pre-chorus and chorus are sung again to end the single.

Tesfaye lets in the beauty of love. It’s his own. His reservations still gnaw at him, though. She quickly erases them away. Like “Love Me Harder,” the single allows more of his personality to shine through. He’s a recovering from watching all his walls crash into the ground.

The  stellar  “Can’t Feel My Face” sets the Weeknd up to be pop’s next big thing.
