Skrillex, Diplo & Justin Bieber

Where Are U Now?

Album: Skrillex and Diplo Present Jack U

Year: 2015

Justin Bieber feels abandoned by his girlfriend in the  heedful             “Where Are U Now?”

Swelling synths open the single and then quickly burst, setting a whimpering tone. The bridge opens the single. He has to talk to someone now. It’s her he wants and he can’t reach her. (“I need you, that I need you/I need you, that I need you/I need you, you, you, you, you, you/I need you, that I need you/I need you, that I need you/I need you, you, you, you, you, you/You, you, you/I need you the most.”)

He says he let her in after pushing every girl away. He allowed her to believe in things again. Before him, she was upset all the time. But now it’s his turn. He says he was there for her. What’s her excuse? (“I gave you the key when the door wasn't open, just admit it/See, I gave you faith, turned your doubt into hoping, can’t deny it/Now I’m all alone and my joys turned to moping/Tell me, where are you now that I need you?/Where are you now?/Where are you now that I need you?/Couldn't find you anywhere/When you broke down I didn't leave you/I was by your side/So where are you now that I need you?/Where are you now that I need you?”)

In the chorus, he demands an answer from her. (“Where are you now that I need you?/Where are you now that I need you?/Where are you now that I need you?”)

He says he gave her self-confidence and did whatever he had to do to help her. When other people were manipulating her, he was the one who kept her away from them. Everyone thought she was going to crash and didn’t care. However, he did. (“I gave you attention when nobody else was payin'/I gave you the shirt off my back, what you sayin', to keep you warm/I showed you the game everybody else was playin', that's for sure/And I was on my knees when nobody else was prayin', oh Lord.”)

A shortened chorus is sung. (“Where are you now that I need you?/Where are you now that I need you?”)

An extended bridge is sung to end the single. (“I need you, that I need you…Where are you now that I need you?/Where are you now that I need you?/Where are you now that I need you?/I need you the most (I need you the most, I need you the most.”)

Skrillex and Diplo’s uneven arrangement  begins as a timid ballad until after the chorus when the it finally gets its Bollywood moment. Then, it turns timid again and really, the arrangement can’t claim shyness anymore.

Bieber is the most grown-up that he will ever be, both in music and in real life. The hammy heartthrob downplays the inherent hostility in the lyrics, turning them into wounded pleas rather than accusations.

In the the  wary “Where Are U Now?” Diplo and Skrillex are too well-behaved and buisnesslike with their beats.
