Girl Crush

Album: Pain Killer

Year: 2014

Karen Fairchild wishes she could be like her crush’s girlfriend in the courtly           “Girl Crush.”

A craving guitar opens the single, setting a longing tone. Her crush has found a special girl.  She’s personable. She has a vibrant laugh, matching all the energy she has. She’s the program director for a local charity. Fairchild is even on good terms with her. (“Hate to admit it but/I got a hard rush/It's not slowing down/I got it real bad/I want everything she has/That smile and that midnight laugh/She's giving you now.”)

In the chorus, she wants to be near his girlfriend and try to emulate her as much as she can. She and her crush get along so well. However, if she could be someone else then he will return her feelings. (“I want to taste her lips/Yeah, 'cause they taste like you/I want to drown myself/In a bottle of her perfume/I want her long blond hair/I want her magic touch/Yeah, 'cause maybe then/You'd want me just as much/I've got a girl crush/I've got a girl crush.”)

It drives her crazy knowing her crush is sleeping with someone else. She wonders what she lacks. (“I don't get no sleep/I don't get no peace/Thinking about her/Under your bed sheets/The way that she's whispering/The way that she's pulling you in/Lord knows I've tried.I can't get her off my mind.”)

An extended chorus ends the single. (“I want to taste her lips/Yeah, 'cause they taste like you/I want to drown myself/In a bottle of her perfume/I want her long blond hair/I want her magic touch/Yeah, 'cause maybe then/You'd want me just as much/I've got a girl crush/I've got a girl crush/Hate to admit it but/I got a hard rush/It's not slowing down.”)

Fairchild admires his crush’s girlfriend too much to really be envious of her. She wants to be wanted and loved by her crush that’s impossible for her to see beyond it. If she looks closer inside herself, she will realize she has all the special qualities and someone will appreciate her.

As for it being controversial, it’s only in country radio’s head. They are miscontruing the term and clueless as to what it really means. It’s country radio that comes across as the square and uptight.

The aspiring “Girl Crush” rebels against country radio and try to make a name for themselves out of it.
