Sam Hunt

Take Your Time

Album: Montevallo

Year: 2014

Sam Hunt doesn’t want to simply be a guy in the disjointed “Take Your Time.”

A chill guitar opens the single, setting an undemanding tone. He takes a breath and decides to go for it. At her table, he tells her he doesn’t mean to be presumptous but he thought maybe she wanted to talk. He explains perhaps there was another person she meant. She answers that she did make eye contact with him. She said that he seemed interesting. Although, she adds, she isn’t into a relationship right now. He tells her that’s ok. He goes on to say he’s kind of sober but he would like to talk to her some more. (“I don't know if you were looking at me or not/You probably smile like that all the time/And I don't mean to bother you but/I couldn't just walk by/And not say hi/And I know your name/Cause everybody in here knows your name/And you're not looking for anything right now/So I don't wanna come on strong/Don't get me wrong/Your eyes are so intimidating/My heart is pounding but/It's just a conversation/No girl I'm not wasted/You don't know me/I don't know you but I want to.”)

In the chorus, he tells her he doesn’t want an intense commitment from her. A conversation is enough for him. No pressure from him. (“I don't wanna steal your freedom/I don't wanna change your mind/I don't have to make you love me/I just want to take your time/I don't wanna wreck your Friday/I ain't gonna waste my lines/I don't have to take your heart/I just wanna take your time.”)

He explains he doesn’t want to sleep with her. She has probably a dozen of them tonight, which her friends had to shoo away. They don’t get the point and linger on. Nonetheless, she must be intrigued by him. She hasn’t told him to go away yet. He asks her if she would like to meet her for coffee later. (“And I know it starts with hello/And the next thing you know you're try to be nice/And some guys getting too close/Trying to pick you up/Trying to get you drunk/And I'm sure one of your friends is about to come over here/Cause she's supposed to save you from random guys/That talk too much and wanna stay too long/It's the same old song and dance but I think you know it well/You could've rolled your eyes/Told me to go to hell/Could've walked away/But you're still here/And I'm still here/Come on let's see where it goes.”)

In the second chorus, he says he doesn’t pry into her life. She can let him as much as she sees fit. (“I don't wanna steal your freedom/I don't wanna change your mind/I don't have to make you love me/I just wanna take your time/I don't have to meet your mother/We don't have to cross that line/I don't wanna steal your covers/I just wanna take your time.”)

In the bridge, he says isn’t trying to see her naked. All he wants to know is her. (“I don't wanna go home with you/I just wanna be alone with you.”)

In the final chorus, he says she doesn’t want to her feel like she has to check in with him. (“I don't wanna steal your freedom/I don't wanna change your mind/I don't have to make you love me/I just wanna take your time/I don't wanna blow your phone up/I just wanna blow your mind/I don't have to take your heart/I just wanna take your time/No, I ain't gotta call you baby/And I ain't gotta call you mine/I don't have to take your heart/I just wanna take your time.”)

Hunt needs to make a choice: talk or sing. It’s a one-sided conversation  and without any interaction from the other person, there isn’t any reason to care. Does she have stinkface? Is she laughing? Really. This is the important stuff.

The dull “Take Your Time” could’ve been so much better.
