Demi Lovato

Cool For The Summer

Album: TBA

Year: 2015

Demi Lovato explores her sexuality in the primitive  “Cool For The Summer.”

Jumpy synths open the single, setting an untamed tone. Her sort-of girlfriend tells her she isn’t sure. Lovato tells her she hasn’t really deeply involved with another girl before. Lovato continues that she’s shared a few kisses here and there but nothing substantial. Her girlfriend says she doesn’t care if people judge them. Lovato says it will be between them for right now. (“Tell me what you want/What you like/It's okay/I'm a little curious too/Tell me if it's wrong/If it's right/
I don't care/I can keep a secret can, you?”)

In the pre-chorus, she says she keeps thinking of her girlfriend’s brush of skin against her own. It would be both be their first time with someone of the same sex. Her girlfriend is close with her mom. She’s ready to come out. Lovato says to let them have this moment. They’ll have a summer romance they will remember for the rest of their lives. (“Got my mind on your body/And your body on my mind/Got a taste for the cherry/I just need to take a bite/Don't tell your mother/Kiss one another/Die for each other/We're cool for the summer.”)

In the chorus, she says their relationship doesn’t have to be a major commitment. They are testing the waters, wondering if it’s something they like. (“Take me down into your paradise/Don't be scared cause I'm your body type/Just something that we wanna try/Cause you and I/We're cool for the summer.”)

They made a bet as to who would make the first advance. After her girlfriend giggles, Lovato flirts she’s ok with whatever naughty thing she planned. (“Tell me if I won/If I did/What's my prize?/I just wanna play with you, too/Even if they judge/Fuck it, I'll do the time/I just wanna have some fun, with you.”)

                The pre-chorus is sung again.

An extended chorus is sung. (“Take me down into your paradise…Just something that we wanna try/Cause you and I/We're cool for the summer/We're cool for the summer/We're cool for the summer.”)

In the bridge, she says she wants her girlfriend. (“Shhhh...don't tell your mother/Got my mind on your body/And your body on my mind/Got a taste for the cherry/
I just need to take a bite.”)

A second extended chorus is sung to end the single. (“Take me down/Take me down into your paradise(Done be scared) Don't be scared cause I'm your body type/
Just something that we wanna try (wanna try)/Cause you and I (you and I)/We're cool for the summer/(Take me down) We're cool for the summer/(Don't be scared) cause I'm your body type/(Just something) Just something that we wanna try/Cause you and I (you and I)/We're cool for the summer/We're cool for the summer.”)

Lovato’s sheared vocals lick, smacking her lips to get some. She has a big voice which was held back by her previous singles (the “Unbroken” album is an exception.) Here, she finally stretches and uses her voice in a different way.

The titallting “Cool For The Summer” is a wild time.
