Not Gonna Get Us
Album: 200 KM/H in the Wrong Lane
Russian girl group t.A.T.u. tout themselves as lesbians and talk about their love for each other. Except, they are dressed in schoolgirl uniforms and cater their image to the male fantasy of what lesbians should be.
Lesbianism, for t.A.T..u.is, wrong. They are bad girls doing bad things. Their sexuality is someting which people can never understand in "Not Gonna Get Us."
Opening with a throbbing electro beat which then builds to the shrill chorus of "not gonna get us/they're not gonna get us/Not gonna get us"). The girls make a promise to stay together despite no one accepting their relationship. ("Starting from here, let's make a promise/You and me, let's just be honest/We're gonna run, nothing can stop us"). They dream of a better life together. Life will be heaven for them and no one will be there to tell them no. ("Soon there will be laughter and voices/Beyond the clouds over the mountains/We'll run away on roads that are empty/Lights from the airfield shining upon you").
They love each other and nothing is going to hold them back. ("Nothing can stop us, not now, I love you/They're not gonna get us/they're not gonna get us").
They have decided to run away together. They will bring each other and rely their spirits to guide them. ("We'll run away, keep everything simple...We rush ahead, the crossroads are empty/Our spirits rise, they're not gonna get us"). They don't have any intentions of returning home and have become each other's support system. ("My love for you, always forever/Just you and me, all else is nothing/Not going back, not going back there/They don't understand/They don't understand us").
Lena Katina and Julie Volkova vocals are angelic and naive complementing the fierce, persistant beats in the single.
"Not Gonna Get Us" could work if t.A.T.u. weren't a gimmick. They act ashamed of their sexuality then proudly grope to titillate others. It's not love (although they pretend it is), it's exploiting the stereotypes of homosexuality which many lesbians and gays are fighting against.
