Album: Toni Braxton
Toni Braxton would crumble and have a nervous breakdown if her boyfriend were to break up with her in the overdramatic "Breathe Again."
The single begins instantly with Braxton singing the chorus. She can't live without him holding or kissing her. Not hearing him say "I love you" to her would be a tragedy. He's the only person she wants to be intimate with. She vows to him that if he leaves, she would cease to exist. ("If I never feel you in my arms again/If I never feel your tender kiss again/If I never hear I love you now and then/Will I never make love to you once again/Please understand if love ends/Then I promise you, I promise you/That, that I shall never breathe again/Breathe again/Breathe again/That I shall never breathe again/Breathe again.")
It appears as though she and her boyfriend had a fight. Before, things between them were calm and not as tense. She thinks of the pleasant memories they have together all the time. She believes this is the final fight. He will dump her. Braxton can't comtemplate what it would be like to be single again. ("And I can't stop thinkin' about/About the way things used to be/And I can't stop thinkin' about/About the love that you make to me/And I can't get you outta my head/How in the world will I begin/To let you walk right out my life/And blow my heart away.")
She continues to say that she can't stop loving him. Her world revolves around him. If he does end the relationship, she would bawl uncontrollably in front of him. ("And I can't stop carin' about/About the apple of my eye/And I can't stop doin' without/Without the center of my life/And I can't get you outta my head/And I know I can't pretend/That I won't die if you decide/You won't see me again.")
She keeps imagining what her life would be without him there anymore. She thinks he's going to be deftinely break up with her after this fight. Somehow, he won't be able to forgive her fatal flaw. She enjoys the sound of her heart pounding when she sees him. ("And I can't stop thinkin' about/About the way my life would be/No I can't stop thinkin' about/How could your love be leavin' me/And I can't get you outta my mind/God knows how hard I tried/And if you walk right out my life/God knows I'd surely die/And I can't stop doin' without/Without the rythm of my heart/No I can't stop doin' without/For I would surely fall apart/And I can't get you outta my mind/Cause I know I can't deny it/And I would die if you decide/You won't see me again.")
The chorus ends the single.
Braxton wears her insecurity on her sleeve in the candid "Breathe Again." A serious fight between her and her boyfriend has caused to worry. While it is overdramatic, it seems as though she's thinking the worst. In new relationships, things can get heightened rather easily. "Breathe Again" captures the tension well even if it's not mentioned.
The song is structured a bit differently, which is to its benefit. The chorus is long as the the verse which allows it to mesh well. The chorus' length also omits a bridge. A bridge would've ruined the flow of the song and is rightfully gone.
