Hung Up
Album: Confessions on a dance floor
Year: 2005

Madonna is anxious for her boyfriend to return her call in the foxy "Hung Up."

The sound of a clock ticking and a rising sample of ABBA's "Gimme Gimme Gimme" starts the single. It sets a nocturnal, swanky tone. She is impatient, checking her cell phone every five minutes to see if maybe she missed a call from her boyfriend.

"Time goes by so slowly/Time goes by so slowly/Time goes by so slowly/Time goes by so slowly/Time goes by so slowly/Time goes by so slowly."

In the chorus, she treasures his every word and action. She's in love with him. All she wants is for him to call her. It doesn't even have to be at a normal time. It could be at 3 a.m. But she's nervous and is preparing herself to dump him.

"Every little thing that you say or do/I'm hung up/I'm hung up on you/Waiting for your call/Baby night and day/I'm fed up/I'm tired of waiting on you."

In the bridge, she weighs her options. She sees herself at a disadvantage. The longer she hangs on, the more she will get hurt. But if she leaves now, it will be another quick flirtation which meant nothing. However, she's confused. She likes him too much now to simply go. She decides to wait some more.

"Time goes by so slowly for those who wait/No time to hesitate/Those who run seem to have all the fun/I'm caught up/I don't know what to do."

The clock ticks as the sample is muffled

"Time goes by so slowlyTime goes by so slowly/Time goes by so slowly/So slowly/So slowly/So slowly/So slowly/I don't know what to do "

The chorus is sung twice.

She hears a midi version of "Minuet In G" and immediately picks up her cell phone. Her boyfriend's name shows up and she answers it. She tells him he's stupid and a week too late. She dumps him. She explains she won't be jerked around and strung along. She adds that she'll be fine and find someone else. He, however, will realize she was the perfect girl for him. But she'll be long gone.

"Ring ring ring goes the telephone/The lights are on but there's no one home/Tick tick tock it's a quarter to two/And I'm done/I'm hanging up on you/I can't keep on waiting for you/I know that you're still hesitating/Don't cry for me/'Cause I'll find my way/You'll wake up one day/But it'll be too late."

The chorus is sung twice. The clock ticks to close to single.

"Hung Up" is a fabulous, trend-setting single. The single is fully entrenched in electro, combining the synth elements of the early 80s with the current futuristic sound. Madonna rejuvantes the nonexistent dance genre in the U.S. and provides the proper follow-up to 1998 album "Ray of Light."
